The Trump administration is looking to cut funding for a program that provides permanent housing to the homeless, a move that may leave those the program aims to help back on the streets, according to a report.

More than 170,000 people could be at risk of experiencing homelessness when more than half the funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) permanent housing program is cut, Politico reported on Monday, citing three HUD employees, internal HUD documents and a person with knowledge of the Continuum of Care (CoC) program.

The cut funds will be moved to transitional housing assistance with some work or service requirements, according to the internal documents and those with knowledge of the situation. The cuts could have a greater impact on rural areas that have less access to city and state funds to supplement federal dollars, the people told the outlet.

“When the subsidy and the support that goes along with those subsidies is removed, it puts people at grave risk,” said the person with inside knowledge of the CoC program. “And most of these folks without these supports will likely end up back in emergency shelters or back on our nation’s streets.”

HUD Secretary Scott Turner wrote in a  Fox News Digital opinion piecei earlier this month about a “paradigm shift” in the department’s approach to homelessness and housing.

“But our goal is to let HUD use real, proven effective strategies, and there is no evidence that giving free apartments to the homeless without preconditions or participation requirements – like job training or treatment – leads to good outcomes,” Turner wrote.

Rep. Sherrill faces nepotism accusations over children’s Naval Academy admission

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill, who is currently embroiled in a controversy involving a cheating scandal while she studied at the U.S. Naval Academy, is facing questions and accusations of nepotism over her children being admitted to that same academy earlier this year.

“I am so proud of all the young men and women from NJ-11 who are reporting to the military academies or academy preparatory programs this summer,” Sherrill said in a June press release highlighting 24 students from her district being appointed to various military academies including two of her children, Lincoln and Margaret Hedberg.

The press release did not note that the two students with her husband’s last name were her children and the photo in the release showing Sherrill posing with the students does not include her children.

“From my time at the Naval Academy, I remember how challenging the academy’s programs are — both academically and physically,” the press release added. “Learning to work as a team and overcoming those challenges prepared me to lead servicemembers as a military officer. I am grateful for these young men and women who are willing to serve our nation in uniform and I wish them the best of luck as they start their careers as future military leaders.”

Members of Congress nominate students to the service academies while the actual academies make the appointments after the representatives submit a list of nominees by the end of January and the academies appoint qualified candidates.

Some on social media have suggested nepotism was at play with their acceptance into the academy given that only 22 students from her district were admitted to the military academies, including just nine to the naval academy, according to the press release.

College rankings show that admissions to the Naval Academy are very competitive with a 9% acceptance rate.

“Mikie Sherrill’s two kids are at the Naval Academy, one of the hardest schools to get into, because of her nepotism,” Rasmussen pollster Mark Mitchell posted on X. “Meanwhile, some hardworking, impoverished, and unconnected teenagers lose out on a life dream they earned.”

Journalist Jennifer Jean Miller posted on X, “Far left politicians like Mikie Sherrill like to virtue signal about privilege…yet have no problem exerting their own privilege. How did Mikie Sherrill’s two kids get into the Naval Academy? Did two other deserving students miss out because of her nepotism?”

While many on social media have claimed that Sherrill nominated one of her children, an aide for Democratic Sen. Cory Booker confirmed to Fox News Digital that Booker nominated one of Sherrill’s children for this year’s freshman class.

“Each year, Senator Booker, as a member of Congress, has the honor of nominating qualified young people to serve in the United States military service academies,” Booker’s office told Fox News Digital.

“Prospective candidates go through an extensive application and screening process with service members and academy volunteers to recommend the best candidates to the academy based on merit. The candidates put forth for each academy represent the best and brightest that New Jersey has to offer.”

Sherrill’s other child was nominated by now-former Democratic Sen. George Helmy, a Helmy spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Sherrill told Fox News Digital in a statement that, in “order to remove even the appearance of a conflict of interest, my children did not compete in my office’s service academy nomination process.”

“Instead, they applied to the offices of the U.S. Senators from New Jersey, who also run academy nomination processes each year, and I am proud that they each earned nominations on their own,” Sherrill added.

“Every year, our office runs a competitive and nonpolitical process to select the best nominees to submit to the academies. I am honored to nominate the service academy appointees from our district who step up to serve our country.”

When asked by Fox News Digital why Sherrill’s press release did not include her children in the picture or mention their relationship to her, Sherrill’s office said that her child appointed by Booker attended that ceremony and that the press release listed all the students from NJ-11 who were appointed to academies, not just those she nominated, which is “routine for the office.”

Sherrill’s campaign called the nepotism questions a “depraved attack” in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“The Trump administration, in concert with the Ciattarelli campaign, released Mikie Sherrill’s unredacted service records — including her Social Security number and parents’ address — and now is desperately doubling down by attacking Mikie’s husband and kids,” the statement said. “It’s despicable, wrong, and underscores just how unfit Jack Ciattarelli is to be governor.”

Federal law (10 U.S.C. § 8454) states that members of Congress may nominate up to 15 candidates for each available vacancy at the U.S. Naval Academy. “Each member of Congress can have 5 constituents attending the Naval Academy at any time,” according to their admissions website.

The combustible ballot box battle in New Jersey, which is one of only two elections for governor across the country this year, was rocked last week after a report revealed that the United States Naval Academy blocked Sherrill from taking part in her 1994 graduation amid a cheating scandal.

Ciattarelli and his campaign are calling on Sherrill, who went on to pilot helicopters during her military career after graduating from the Naval Academy, to release her military records to explain why she was blocked from attending her graduation ceremony.

“What we learned today is that she was part of it in some way, shape or form. Come clean, release the records. Tell us what’s in your disciplinary records. I think the people of New Jersey deserve that,” Ciattarelli said Thursday night in an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity.”

But a second report revealed that the National Personnel Records Center, which is a branch of the National Archives and Records Administration, errantly released Sherrill’s improperly redacted military personnel files, which included private information including her social security number, to a Ciattarelli ally.

The news spurred calls by top Democrats across the country for an investigation.

“To have a guy I’m running against, it will stop at nothing, it will stop at nothing, who will illegally obtain records. It’s just beyond the pale,” Sherrill, who served as a federal prosecutor before winning election to Congress, charged Thursday night on the campaign trail in Plainfield, New Jersey.

The two candidates face off next week in the second and final debate in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.

Judge Lamberth blocks VOA terminations, criticizes Kari Lake’s leadership

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth has blocked a new wave of terminations at Voice of America, offering harsh words for Kari Lake and saying the Trump administration’s conduct in his case would support civil contempt proceedings, if only the plaintiffs had asked.

In the 19-page ruling, Judge Lamberth halted the mass reduction in force at the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) and issued a warning that cuts would “cement” VOA’s failure to meet legal obligations to provide reliable news.

Lamberth’s list of failures included statutory violations involving VOA shutting down mandated language services despite clear congressional directives.

He stated that VOA acknowledged its “radio presence” had shrunk to a single 30-minute daily program in Dari and Pashto, leaving gaps in coverage for nations like North Korea and China.

Kari Lake was called out for admitting under oath that she hadn’t “given it a lot of thought” whether Africa qualifies as a “significant region of the world” under the law and confirmed VOA produces no programming for South America.

And Lamberth accused the Trump administration of misleading the court, going as far as to call it incredible to suggest the RIF was “uncertain” while evidence showed it was already in motion.

The RIF notices covered both VOA and USAGM employees, and Lamberth rejected the government’s attempt to carve out non-VOA staff.

JUDGE PUTS TEMPORARY PAUSE ON TRUMP’S MASS LAYOFFS AT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

He accused Lake and her team of “thumbing their noses at Congress’s commands” and showing “brazen disinterest” in statutory duties — strong language worth including.

The contempt warning wasn’t just about tone; it was also tied to their failure to produce required documents about future RIFs, despite court orders.

Overall, the order keeps VOA’s workforce intact through Oct. 14, when Lake will be forced to work with her team to file a plan showing how they will restore the legally required programming.

The judge warned that their “disrespect” for other rulings would have been enough to trigger a contempt trial.

The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Minnesota over its sanctuary policies that the Trump administration says interfere with the federal government’s enforcement efforts on illegal immigration.

The complaint, filed Monday, names the State of Minnesota, Hennepin County, Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna S. Witt, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and the Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, as defendants.

The complaint argues that not only are sanctuary policies illegal under federal law, but lead to the release of dangerous criminals who would otherwise be subject to removal, including illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes.

“Minnesota officials are jeopardizing the safety of their own citizens by allowing illegal aliens to circumvent the legal process,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. “This Department of Justice will continue to bring litigation against any jurisdiction that uses sanctuary policies to defy federal law and undermine law enforcement.”

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry says he has formally requested federal assistance (RFA) to activate up to 1,000 Louisiana National Guard personnel under Title 32.

Landry announced his intentions during an appearance on “Hannity” Monday evening, stating his request for federal assistance had been submitted to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Landry cited “ongoing public safety concerns regarding high crime rates throughout the state,” adding that local law enforcement is overwhelmed by the number of homicides, carjackings and gang violence that “significantly exceed the national average.”

He also says manpower shortages have been compounded by hurricanes and other natural disasters, causing the already thin police force to be stretched to its breaking point.

Louisiana faces “a convergence of elevated violent crime rates in Shreveport, Baton Rouge and New Orleans coupled with critical personnel shortages within local law enforcement,” according to Landry.

The additional Guard support is expected to “supplement law enforcement presence in high-crime areas, provide logistical and communication support, and secure critical infrastructure.”

Under Title 32 authority, they would patrol high-crime neighborhoods, bolster police presence in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Shreveport, while securing critical infrastructure.

In the past, deployments of the National Guard have proven effective, Landry said, pointing to a 50% drop in crime during Mardi Gras and other major events earlier this year.

According to USA Facts, Louisiana ranks among the nation’s most dangerous states consistently. In 2024, for every 100,000 people, there were 520 violent crimes and 2,296 property crimes. Compared to the U.S. average, the violent crime rate in 2024 in Louisiana was 44.8% higher, and its rate of property crime was 30.5% higher.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatar for striking its territory during a meeting with President Donald Trump, the White House said Monday.

Israel’s military targeted senior Hamas leadership in Qatar with an airstrike earlier this month that also killed a Qatari security official.

Trump distanced himself from Netanyahu’s decision to strike a top ally in the Middle East, writing on Truth Social at the time it “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.”

Qatar has been a key host of discussions aimed at hashing out a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. It also hosts about10,000 U.S. troops.

During a trilateral call with Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Netanyahu expressed “deep regret that Israel’s missile strike against Hamas targets in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari serviceman,” according to a White House readout.

“He further expressed regret that, in targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty and affirmed that Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future.”

Al Thani welcomed the assurances, according to the readout, and Trump “expressed his desire to put Israeli-Qatar relations on a positive track after years of mutual grievances and miscommunications.”

“They really had a heart-to-heart conversation,” Trump said in a news conference after his meeting with Netanyahu. “It was a great conversation, and I thought it was productive.”

He said that the U.S., Israel and Qatar agreed to launch a formal trilateral mechanism to begin dialogue “to enhance mutual security, correct misperceptions, and avoid future misgivings.”

Trump praised the emir as a “fantastic person” and noted his role as a mediator in the peace process. He added that he hoped Qatar could join the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization deals between Middle Eastern nations and Israel that Trump brokered during his first administration.

It came as Trump unveiled a 20-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza.

The plan includes granting Hamas terrorists who give up their arms in favor of peace “amnesty,” establishing Gaza as a “deradicalized terror-free zone” and Israel pulling back from the territory and ceasing military operations.

The plan explained that within 72 hours of Israel accepting the agreement, Hamas will release remaining hostages in its captivity — whether they are alive or deceased.

Upon the release of the remaining hostages, Israel will then release “250 life-sentence prisoners plus 1,700 Gazans who were detained after Oct. 7, 2023,” according to the fifth point of the plan.

“Once all hostages are returned, Hamas members who commit to peaceful co-existence and to decommission their weapons will be given amnesty. Members of Hamas who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries,” the sixth point of the plan read.

Gaza will not be controlled by Hamas or the Palestinian Authority, but by “those committed to peace,” according to Netanyahu.

South Texas Democratic congressional candidate Bobby Pulido is being criticized for feeding a “sickness” and “spreading hate” through his rhetoric against President Donald Trump and Republicans, especially in light of a deadly anti-ICE shooting in Dallas this week.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, former Texas Republican Rep. Mayra Flores, the first Mexican-born woman elected to Congress, criticized Pulido and other Democrats for “attacking our men and women serving this country for enforcing the laws.”

“It’s this type of hateful rhetoric that is causing innocent lives to be lost,” Flores said. “And because of that, we’re seeing all these shootings, and it will continue to happen because, at the end of the day, this hateful rhetoric is coming from members of Congress, from senators.”

“They need to set an example,” she went on. “Americans are looking up to these individuals. And so, if they’re seeing that they’re spreading hate, then that instills in them hate as well towards our men and women [in law enforcement].”

This comes as the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) accused Pulido, who is a Tejano music star, of having a “lengthy history of engaging in violent, extreme political rhetoric.”

The committee said that despite Pulido condemning political violence, such as Charlie Kirk’s assassination, and calling for a toning down in rhetoric on both sides, his own words through the years have not been consistent with this call.

On Sept. 10, Pulido posted on X, “I don’t care what side of the political aisle you are, what happened to Charlie Kirk is abhorrent. The political rhetoric needs to be brought down on both sides. I pray for him, his family and also for our country.”

According to the NRCC, however, Pulido’s inflammatory rhetoric goes back years, even including dressing up as a blood-soaked Trump for Halloween in 2015. A screenshot of the since-deleted post shared with Fox News Digital shows a bloodied Trump with a Spanish caption reading, “Years ago Donald Trump and Paquita had a son. Here is the exclusive image.”

He has also suggested that Trump voters are racist, commenting on a 2017 news story about California farms being untended due to the president’s immigration policies by saying, “That’s what racist America wanted, that’s what you got.”

In another post from 2016, Pulido wrote that Trump is “racist all the way” and that “his candidacy plays to the alt right.”

This August, he accused Republicans of “literally becoming everything they accused others of being. Marxists and fascists.”

Pulido also previously expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement by posting a black square on his Instagram for “Blackout Tuesday” and sharing a video of a Houston BLM rally with the caption “#GodBlessTexas.”

He has said in a video that “there’s a lot of great cops out there” but that “at the end of the day, there’s not a country out there that doesn’t oppress.”

Referring to allegedly racist police officers in a 2017 X post, Pulido used profanities in Spanish to describe them.

Addressing Pulido and other Democrats directly, Flores asked them to “please stop playing political games with our men and women that are just doing their job.”

“At the end of the day, we’re all Americans. We want the best for our communities, and they should not be prioritizing their political party over safety,” she said.

Flores said that for many who grew up listening to Pulido’s music, he has a special responsibility to set an example of civility and respect.

“He is an icon in the Tejano industry. A lot of people look up to his music, and so he has an obligation to talk about this issue and to show respect towards our [law enforcement] men and women because he has such a huge fan base,” she said.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, NRCC spokesman Reilly Richardson said, “Bobby Pulido’s history of engaging in extreme political rhetoric is utterly disqualifying.”

Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, said that “it’s past time Democrats take responsibility for their violent rhetoric, which has fueled these attacks, and join the fight to protect our brave ICE officers.” (Mike Segar/Reuters)

“Radical Democrats like Pulido have been unapologetically demonizing ICE agents and our law enforcement for years,” said Reilly.

“A deep and pervasive sickness has infected the radical left in this country, and Democrats like Bobby Pulido are feeding it,” he added.

Meanwhile, another Texas leader, Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson, said the problem goes far beyond Pulido.

He called the attack on the Dallas ICE facility last week “horrific,” saying it “proves the Left’s relentless attacks on law enforcement puts our officers in real danger.”

“It’s past time Democrats take responsibility for their violent rhetoric, which has fueled these attacks, and join the fight to protect our brave ICE officers!” said Jackson.

Pulido did not respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment by the time of publication.

FIRST ON FOX: An illegal alien who left an obscenity-laden bomb threat to a member of Congress was arrested by ICE over the weekend, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, the DHS said that Rigoberto Albizar-Martinez, a 58-year-old Cuban illegal living in Tampa, was arrested by ICE over the weekend as part of its efforts to crack down on the “worst of the worst” criminal illegal aliens.

DHS said that Albizar-Martinez threatened to bomb the office of Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla.

He was sentenced to a year in prison in May after being found guilty in December of leaving a “vulgar, racist, obscenity-laden voicemail” in which he threatened to plant a bomb in the congresswoman’s Tampa office, according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Local outlet WFLA reported that in his message, Albizar-Martinez said in Spanish, “I’m going to plant a bomb in your office. It’s a threat,” and “It’s a threat, so take it however you want you son of a f****** b****.”

The outlet also reported that in the same message, Albizar-Martinez also attacked Democrats, black people and pro-Palestinian people.

Commenting on his arrest by ICE, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to Fox News Digital that “there is no place for political violence in America.”

“Rigoberto Albizar-Martinez threatened to bomb a Congresswoman’s office,” said McLaughlin. “Thanks to the brave men and women of ICE, this illegal alien and national security threat will be out of our country.

“Nothing will deter us to remove the worst of the worst from America communities,” she added.

Castor did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

This comes as many Democrats have criticized ICE agents for carrying out immigration enforcement operations, accusing them of racially profiling people, using “Gestapo tactics” and terrorizing communities.

DHS said that over the weekend, it also arrested several other criminal illegal aliens, including child rapists, gang members and a human smuggler.

Among those arrested was Jorge German Aglony, a Chilean illegal in California, who was convicted of inflicting pain and suffering on a dependent adult or elder, as well as receipt and possession of child pornography.

Another illegal arrested, Leonardo Velazquez-Marin, from Mexico, was also convicted of possession of child pornography in Dallas County, Texas. Also in Texas, ICE arrested Jose Elias Mejia-Orellana, a Honduran national who was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 in Collin County.

In Maryland, ICE arrested another child predator, Melvin Guiakora, from Central African Republic, who was convicted for sexual solicitation of a minor in Washington County.

ICE also arrested a member of the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion, Mexican national Adan Mares-Martinez, who was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury in Norwalk, California.

Another illegal, Elvin Humberto Madrigal-Calero, from Nicaragua, was arrested following a conviction of involuntary manslaughter in Pulaski County, Virginia.

In El Centro, California, Mexican national Oscar Morales-Valencia, was arrested by ICE following a conviction of bringing in and harboring aliens.

This comes shortly after DHS announced that two million illegal immigrants “have been removed or have self-deported” from the U.S. since Jan. 20, putting the Trump administration on pace to break records.

In less than 250 days, an estimated 1.6 million illegal immigrants have voluntarily self-deported, while 400,000 were removed by federal law enforcement, the DHS said last week, describing the situation as a “new milestone.”

“Ramped-up immigration enforcement targeting the worst of the worst is removing more and more criminal illegal aliens off our streets every day and is sending a clear message to anyone else in this country illegally: Self-deport or we will arrest and deport you,” said McLaughlin.

After an illegal alien, Ian Andre Roberts, the superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa, was arrested by ICE, Republicans blew the whistle on the fact that he was a registered active Democrat voter in the state of Maryland.

According to the official website for the Maryland State Board of Elections, Roberts, who overstayed a student visa from 1999, has an active voter status and is registered as a Democrat in Maryland. The development was first reported on by columnist Dustin Grage.

Republican state Delegate Matt Morgan, who is chair of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, told Fox News Digital that Roberts’ registration means that he is eligible to vote in all federal, state and local elections despite not being a U.S. citizen, and also despite likely not having lived in Maryland for the past decade.

Morgan explained that there is nothing in Maryland law allowing for non-citizens to be registered to vote in federal or state elections even if Roberts were still a legal resident.

Now, the House Freedom Caucus is demanding answers from the Maryland State Board of Elections about “gaping holes” in the state’s election integrity systems.

In a letter sent to the elections board on Monday, the Freedom Caucus also demanded answers on why the board has been “obstructing a valid request by the Department of Justice to ensure compliance with federal election laws, citing immigration enforcement as a primary concern.

Morgan pointed to a letter the elections board sent to the Justice Department in August in which State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis expressed concern that if the board gave over voter information to the federal government that data would be used for “used for enforcement of immigration laws against Maryland residents.”

Commenting on the letter, Morgan asked, “If illegal aliens are not allowed to vote, why would they be on the voter rolls in the first place? And how would that enhance immigration enforcement? I don’t know, but that’s the excuse that they wrote to the DOJ.”

“It’s ridiculous,” he went on, adding that “everyone reasonable wants a safe and secure election.”

Before his arrest by ICE, Roberts headed the Des Moines Public Schools, the largest school district in the state, despite not being legally authorized to work in the U.S. after his employment authorization card expired in 2020, according to authorities.

He was taken into custody on a fugitive warrant last week. ICE agents arrested Roberts after he attempted to flee and was found hiding in brush. The vehicle Roberts was driving was found with $3,000 in cash, a fixed-blade hunting knife, and a loaded Glock 19 firearm, ICE said.

Roberts also had illegal weapons possession charges from 2020 and was given a final order of removal in 2024.

The state of Iowa revoked Roberts’ education license on Sunday, triggering the Des Moines School Board to place him on unpaid leave.

“We were notified that the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners revoked Doctor Roberts’ license to practice as a superintendent in the state of Iowa. Without such a license, Doctor Roberts is not in compliance with his contract,” said Jackie Norris, chair of the school board.

Morgan said that though Roberts’ case is baffling, he fears he may just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to illegal aliens registered to vote in Maryland.

“We have no idea how widespread this is. We hear rumors, but we have no idea,” he said.

“This is uncharted territory,” he added.
